The Big Callback (part 1)
“I will never be satisfied.”
This week we are going to talk about “the big callback”. Not to be confused with “the callback”. The “big callback” is the high stakes callback. The callback you’ve been waiting for. This is the callback of your dreams. This is the callback that may change your life. Try not to vomit under the pressure of it all, okay?
Once you have made it past initial casting calls and callbacks and you are actually in the room with the director, and the producers and the creative team who will undoubtedly decide your fate, how do you keep your cool? Let me tell ya, you may not. You will most likely be super nervous no matter what you do. But what will help, no matter what, is being prepared. What do I mean by being prepared? Of course you’re prepared! You learned this material ages ago, you’re ready. Okay great.
What will you wear? Is it clean, ironed and ready to go? What about that audition book, is it ready for a “what else have you got in your book?” moment? What about the weather and your means of transportation that day? Do you have a a couple crisp headshot/resume combos ready to hand to casting? Plan everything to the last detail so that you can control your nerves a bit better. Don’t be late, don’t be wrinkly, and be ready for anything they may ask you in the room. Then take a deep breath, rest in the fact that you’ve prepared for this day, and that you simply have nothing to lose. There may be some more nervous actors in the waiting room, don’t let them psych you out, throw in some headphones and play some tunes that make you feel like the champion you are. And KILL that “big callback.”
Now, here’s the hardest part. Once you’ve killed that audition and you’ve charmed casting and the creative team, leave it there. Go treat yourself to a latte or a new book and leave it all right there. You did the work. You controlled what you could. The rest isn’t up to you. You’ve done your part. It is important to me that you succeed. And sometimes the “big callback” can be the very thing that turns your world upside down. Don’t let it.
Cheers,
Adrienne
