Theatre is all about relationships

Something always brings me back to you. It never takes too long
— Sara Bareilles

I want to talk about relationships. Theatre is about entertaining, but it’s also about relationships. The relationships we build in our lives that make us human - the love, the heartache, the friendships, the betrayal. These meaningful relationships are crucial in theatre. Without them, why would we care? Why are we invested in these characters?

Do you have a song in your book that shows a deep relationship between two characters? The heartache. The familiarity. The depth. A song that shows intimacy and vulnerability? A song that dives deep into the desires of a character? It’s important to have a song like this in your book because it shows casting that you can be vulnerable. And vulnerability is everything.

This week I’m singing a song from one of my favorite singer/songwriters, Sara Bareilles. I have chosen this song because it demonstrates that meaningful relationships play a huge role in how we move through life as human beings.

What songs would you choose to demonstrate these colors in your musical palette?

Cheers,

Adrienne
